The Best $28 Ever Spent

I'm all for being frugal. Sometimes a little too much in certain areas. There is, of course, that other side of me that isn't so frugal in other areas. But, we're talking saving money here so let's get on with it....
I am always searching for ways to cut our budget. About 2 years ago the thought came to me! Why am I paying to have my boys hair cut?! At that point we had 3 boys in the family (2 boys and one husband) that were regularly getting their hair cut about every 6 weeks. Now we have 4 (3 boys and one husband.)

A haircut in our area, for a boy, can run anywhere from $12-$20, depending on where you get it cut. So, let's do some math......

52wks in a year/ 6wks = 8.67 haircuts per year per boy

and 8.67 haircuts x $12-$20 per cut = $104 - $173

With 4 boys the total would then be $416 - $692 per year!!!

So, just over 2 years ago I ventured down to our local Wal-Mart and bought this....

For $28.

Yep. That is all I have spent on boy's haircuts in the last 2 years, a whopping $28.

Savings? Best case scenario = $832 (2 years worth) - $28 = $804
Now that is a chunk of change.

I do get my hair cut (for $20) about twice a year and Timber has yet to even need a haircut. Yay for being frugal! Excuse me while I go spend that extra money on fabric.........er, I mean bills.

Do you cut your boys hair? Have you ever figured up your savings for doing so?

Ha, now that you bring it up I did cut my sons hair when he was in ROTC (high school). They required a cut every two weeks (!) so I bought clippers.
My DH is retired from military, I have cut his hair for the past ten years. A set of comb attachments keeps it from being "too" short. LOL
Oh, I scissor cut my long hair every few months. DH cuts the back for me.

My daughter cuts her dad's and brother's hair whenever they need it and has saved us tons of money over the past years. I tell my other daughter that she should learn how now while she can for her future home.

We have three boys and all of them get their hair cut by daddy. We've been doing home hair cuts for about 10 years. Needless to say we have gone through many clippers! Daddy is the only one that gets his professionally cut. Being an officer, he has to look groomed, and if I were to cut his hair he'd look like a clown!
Yay for frugality!!

I do all the hair cutting in the house. I have actually never been to a salon / beauty parlor to get my hair cut. My mom always cut it and then I started doing it. Right now it's very long, like lower back / hip length. I cut my boys hair too. I've never calculated the cost but I like your stats :)

I am all with you there! I started cutting my husband's hair before we were married. I save him hundreds of dollars a year! =) I also cut my son's hair...though I paid a few times...course it was only $5 or so for a buzz. =)

I have tried to cut my daughter's hair, but it's so thick, I just don't make it look nice, so we do get hers cut. =) Mine...only 1-3 times a year depending on the length I'm keeping...I got it cut last July...thinking of not cutting again till this July. =) Unless I go crazy with how it looks. =)

Yes! I've been cutting my husband's hair for about 11 years now (with the same inexpensive clippers and a pair of scissors!). I also cut all the rest of the hair in the family (including mine). (Our 6-year-old curly girl has yet to need a hair cut, however. Her curls don't grow very fast!)

I'm sure we've saved a ton of money by cutting our own hair. :)

For the last year and a half or so, my husband has cut my hair, and I cut his. We save a bunch of money this way, and my hair stays much healthier with regular trims. Mind you, my hair is all one length, just past my shoulders. My sister goes to a salon every two months and usually spends $80-$100 each time for cut and color. It took my husband some time to come around to the idea of cutting my hair, but he is all about the savings.

I used to cut my boys hair when they were home and now cut my hubby's. We figure we save a bundle that way.

You probably save even more than you calculated, assuming that you tip your hair stylist when the boys have cuts done (I always tip 20+ % for mine so that adds up too.)

Now my challenge is learning how to groom my two little cockapoos. It costs me a whopping $53 per dog (before tip!) every 6 - 8 weeks (so that's generally $125) We're going broke just having them clipped.

Suggestions anyone?

Hey BAP, I was actually heading over to comment about just that topic even before I read your comment! I won a gift card to amazon from a blog giveaway and used it to buy dog clippers! I have a Havanese that gets shaved about once every 3 months and it's right at $60!

Considering I ask a friend to cut my hair or go to the beauty school, that was just too much! It's really not that bad if you want one overall length plus there are TONS of instruction videos about it too. The weirdest part is the mirror that came with the clippers. According to the website, it's included so you can show your dog the new haircut!!!!

My dad let me cut his hair once...and then never again. He gets his hair cut at by a stylist. Well, my hair is getting long...at about shoulder length. I have someone else cut my hair, because I'd do a horrible job if left to my own devices :) :) That's cool, that you've saved all that money by invest in a $28 hair clipper :) :) That's cool :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

Good for you; there's always another way or three to trim the bills -smile-.

yep, so with ya! I purchased a clippers set a few years ago and it definitely saves money.
My boys are pretty easy. Pick out the guard for the length they want and go over the entire head. Done! Can't get much easier than that!

My husband just suggested this about 2 nights ago. I think i could do the top and sides, it's the in between I'm wondering about. Perhaps some you tube videos would show me how to do that. You've got me thinking!!

Good for you! We bought one about a year ago and my oldest daughter and I take turns cutting the three boys' hair. Somedays it is more of an adventure than others, but it does save money plus gas!

Actually I used to cut my daughters hair, especially after several vists when whe wasabout 7 yrs. I had to re-cut her hair every time, it's so straight everything showed. I have cut my son's as an adult since he will do it himself and needs help keeping it even. I have extended my husbands cut by cleaning the neck and edges.

I have always cut my boys & husband's hair. I just did the math...
Husband 17 years x 9 cuts a year x 10.00= $1530.00 savings

16 year old son $1350
13 year old son $1080
11 year old son $900

Total saved.... $4860!! I think we have had 6 pairs of clippers in that time frame. We have still saved thousands!
