It's Tuna Time

The Tuna is just starting to come into the harbor this year. Getting fresh from the ocean Tuna is one of the many blessings of living near the coast. And because we're mountain folk, backwoods, okie-like, this is how we do it- outside, on the plywood, away from the house.

The kids had more fun than they should have with the fish. Ya know, the usual poking of the eyes and slapping the mouth open and shut to make the fish "chomp down."
My wonderful mountain man of a husband is a pro at cutting up any animal- including fish.
I'll be canning this later this month. For right now though, since other things are so busy, the Tuna is in the freezer.

In other boon-dock news, we have another bear. No matter how many we kill off.... I mean... "drive away," they still come back. The bear was here a couple weeks ago, dumpster diving. But the other night he/she did something that put a price on it's head. Too bad the Beekeeping book doesn't have a "What to do in case of bear attack" section.

I'm going to try and reconstruct as much of the hive as possible and then wait up with the 300 Wetherby until the bear comes back.

I'm so sorry about your bee's...what frustration. I hope you're able to get the problem resolved. =)

Kids love playing with animals...mine sure do...they were out smushing a snake just now...and my daughter claimed she just wanted to hold it! =)

Oh no! I'm so sorry about the bees...bears is bad news to us country-folk! Glad to see that you're not going to take it! :)

Can't wait for the tuna up here~last year the tuna didn't come in far enough to drive down the price, so we're hoping for a better year!

My Mister shot, I mean, drove away, a coyote a couple weeks ago...that thing sure did stink, but it didn't keep my boys from playing with it...gross.

Best wishes on...ahem...driving away the bear. May you also find some more bees.

Lisa, No they don't. Since they're really just "garbage bears" and they eat things like moldy food, dirty diapers, and plastic oil containers, they taste horrible. It's too bad really, bear sausage is great! :)

Darn! Is this your only hive? One of the ladies who helped me with my hive has had multiple bear incidents. They live east of me in a bit more remote area. We have only had one bear since we moved here and it was hit and killed crossing 101. Hoping things get better!

Ack! Devistating! Get the bear! You will know which one it is, because I would think he is moving a little slow.

I stumbled upon your blog through a fellow Del Norte homeschooler. We have about 5 different bears that visit regularly. They are such nuisances, but I LOVE to watch them from the safety of our 2nd story deck! We have had luck with airsoft guns, and bean bag-shot gun rounds. Thump em' hard enough and they disappear, of course that just means another will take it's spot! We have a lot of problems with the foxes. They are constantly getting our chickens. How do you combat that?
Anyway, I enjoy your reading your blog and look forward to reading future stories!
Blessings, Wendy
