what in the world?

Have you ever had one of those days where you were asking yourself "What in the world?" as the day progressed? That was me, yesterday. Here's why.
First, our carrots. What's up with them this year? I picked about 10 yesterday and over half of them weighed more than 1 pound.....each.Seriously? How do carrots get this big? In a normal sense, I mean. This seed was just planted in May, it's not as if the carrots have been in the ground for a year!Next, green beans. I swear that I packed all the jars the same and yet one came out looking like this. As if some little critter got into the jar in the pressure canner, drank half the water and ate about 1/4 of the green beans. How did that happen? Finally, eggs. More specifically turkey eggs. How many do they lay? I read somewhere, I thought, that a turkey may only lay one egg in their lifetime. Really? Is that true? Well, we got one yesterday. It's the egg in the middle. Has anyone ever eaten a turkey egg? I'd suppose they are about the same as chicken eggs. For some reason though I have this idea that I'll crack it open and something hideous will be lurking inside. Kinda scary.

Our carrots in the garden always grew really fast - but I have never seen them this big! Did you unknowingly plant a giant variety? ;)
Let us know about the egg - I would be interested to see if it tastes the same as chicken eggs.

I would think the turkey egg would be like a duck egg or a good free range chicken egg in flavor. Bigger yolk than a chicken egg and a bit "richer" or "eggier" in taste, but really, in my opinion, an egg is an egg. If you are nervous, use it in baking. But if it were me, I would make a killer omelet...

Those carrots make me jealous, I have zero luck with them.

Too funny!

Are the carrots good? I have a thing about carrots...don't have a garden, but I only buy the baby carrots in the store, because sometimes the others have a horrid taste.

Not sure on the turkey egg either...I've only had chicken...but it couldn't be that bad...and think about it...people eat ostrich eggs! =)

Wow....I'm guessing the soil is super good this year?...I don't know anything about growing carrots...I do LOVE to eat them...Those are huge....you could carve one of those...:) :):)

Well, I'm not sure about a turkey egg, either....Now if youi crack it open and it starts foaming...and a creature crawls out...run, it's probably invasion of the body snatchers..but a turkey egg will probably just take a little more time to cook than a chicken egg? Have you tried it y et? What's it taste like?

Have a good week. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

I asked my father in law (who grew up on a farm and ate home grown dairy veggies, eggs, went to town once a week for something store bought to eat). He said they taste like a duck egg.

Wow those are big carrots. I've never had luck with growing them myself, yours are amazing lol.

I imagine a turkey egg would taste a little stronger than a duck egg... like a duck egg tastes a little stronger than a chicken egg. I'm interested to know what your taste test results are!

I would venture to say that your seal on that jar of green beans is no good. I would use that one first. Did you let the pressure in the canner drop too fast...sometimes that causes a rush of water to come from the jars. Just a few thoughts

Well since I have never eaten a duck egg I don't know. But we have eaten plenty of Turkey eggs. They are large, strong and you could use them as an object of protection by pitching them at someone.

Because they are large one doesn't need as many to feed a family. See a perk.

Our carrots have been behaving strangely also. What part of Nor. Cal are you in?

WOW! I think I need to go out and check on my carrots now. That's crazy! I've never seen a carrot that big. :) If they taste good, it's kind of a fun blessing.

We want turkeys, but will have to wait until next year. I'd think their eggs would be about the same as duck eggs. Pretty tasty! :)

Have a GREAT weekend! :)

I love reading about your garden. We had a big when I was growing up and it was so fun to dig the carrots and potatoes to see what was there. :-) Thanks for the memories.

goatldi- We're up in Del Norte County. Honestly, I've lived in this state my entire life and didn't even know this county existed until just before I moved here ;)

Heather- I almost baked with the turkey egg today but I think that may be whimping out so I'm gonna try and eat it fried- just waiting to get the guts.

Anita- The carrots are not good eating carrots, striaght out of the garden. They're not sweet enough. I used them last night with a roast though and they were great!

I've always wondered about Turkey Eggs. What they look like, what they taste like. Can't wait to hear more about it. The carrots are ginormous! They look great.

Well I don't know about turkey eggs - would be interested in finding out what it's like.
The carrots - wow - they are huge!
Have a great day

whooooaa! Those carrots are huge! Mine might have had a chance to get that big if Lindsey would have let them grow beyond the "baby" stage. She would come in the house with a handful of teeny carrots, so excited because she picked them. She always ate them, so I guess I can't complain.

Are you guys enjoying some of this beautiful sunshine down there? I hope so!
