Bread Making 101: Hamburger Buns

Do you have kids? Or have you raised children? Do you make your own hamburger patties (instead of buying those preformed ones?) As a mom, I have always made our hamburger patties and when I make them for my kids I make them small. Maybe 3" in diameter. Because really, my kids aren't going to be eating huge hamburgers, they're 2 and 3. Cutting a regular burger in half always resulted in them thinking they were cheated somehow.I forgot to take photos of the buns the night I made them so theses were the leftover small ones.

Have you ever made burgers and then went to stick them in the bun and thought, "Wait this is way too big (or small) for my burger!!" Making your own buns is fun and easy plus you probably have all the ingredients on hand already. Here's how:

Homemade Buns

1c milk
1/2c water
1/4c butter
4 1/2c flour (you can use all purpose- I use a combo of bread and spelt flours)
2 1/4tsp yeast
2 TB sugar
1 1/2tsp salt
1 egg

Directions:
1. Heath milk, water and butter in saucepan until just warm.
2. In a mixing bowl combine 1 3/4c flour, yeast, sugar and salt.
3. Stir the milk mixture into the flour mixture and combine.
4. Add the egg and mix in.
5. Stir in remaining flour, half cup at a time; mixing well after each addition.
6. Knead for about 8 minutes.
7. Pull dough into 12 equal portions (or make up your own sizes) and shape into smooth balls.
8. Place balls on parchment lined backing sheet and gently press down on each ball to flatten slightly. Let rise in a warm location for 35 minutes.
9. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
*I was also thinking that if you shaped your dough a little more "log like" that this would make great hot dog buns too!*

These look so delicious. I think I'm going to try them. Right now, my family is in the hamburger mode and we don't like the store bought buns.
Thanks for sharing your recipe.

I agree! If you look at the store bought bun ingredients, it scares you a little. Plus, summer time is always hamburger time! :)

I think in almost 8 years I've only ever made my own burgers 2x? I love homemade ones but burgers are kinda my day off meal :) I have made buns more often though, making them with the same dough as my regular bread. I'll have to try your recipe sometime. Do you have a good hamburger recipe to share?

Thank you for the recipe! I do make hamburger buns from time to time but I'm always ready to try a new recipe. Although it is more work, I try to make them at least some of the time because the list of ingredients in the store bought buns is simply not appealing. :)

Suzanne,
I didn't even know there was such a thing! :) I just take my meat and usually mix in plenty of sea salt, pepper, garlic powder and a little chili powder then call it good!

Laure Jeanne,
I would say that normally making something like this at home is more time consuming but theses are done start to table in less than an hour and that is super appealing to me!

I made this recipe last night and YUMMY! I used a mix of spelt and all-purpose. I'd like to use more grains over the all-purpose so I'll have to experiment but this will most definitely become my fall back recipe. Thanks for sharing.

I made these yesterday with sloppy joes, and silly me, I made the milk and butter HOT and then dumped them in to the flour and yeast...I don't know what I was thinking. Well yes I do, my 5 year old was standing there asking me question after question and I got distracted.:) Of course the buns ended up much too heavy, which I knew would happen...it's okay though, I'll do better next time!
