Soap Making 101: Resources

If you're like me and you live no where near anything (except a Wal-Mart and a grocery store) then you may shop on the internet a lot. If you live in a more urban area then you may have great soaping resources near by. Check into it. But for this post, I'm going to address internet friendly resources.

Resource #1, Information:
Books! Your local library or Barnes and Noble should have a bunch of great book s that cover all different types of soap making. A highly recommended book is The Soapmaker's Companion.

The Soap Queen Blog recipes and all kinds of good info!
Lye calculators here and here.
CP soap recipes here.

Resource #2, Supplies:
Brambleberry I love their stuff! Great prices on all the fats, lye, molds and anything else you could need for CP soap or melt and pour soap! Not to mention, items to make lotions, make up, candles and more.
From Nature With Love They have GREAT essential and fragrance oils. This is my personal favorite when it comes to oils. They also have a wide range of other things, like Brambleberry, such as molds, bath accessories, candle making supplies, etc.
Mountain Rose Herbs Another great site for things like oils and fats, not to mention fun packaging containers, bulk herbs and tea!
Organic Creations They have a great list of organic supplies if you want to make organic soap.

I hope that this information is useful to you this month!

Heather, thank you so much for sharing this information. My husband and I tried making soap a couple of months ago and I don't think the recipe was a good one. I look forward to trying it again, in fact we were just talking about it about 4 days ago :)

Have a blessed day!

Heather, do you like the wood molds over the plastic ones? And do you have to line the wood with wax paper or anything? Oh, and one more questions.... sorry... can you use the same wood mold to make glycerine soap? Thanks for the help!

Amy,
I have never tried a plastic mold. I have alaways used wood. So I can't really comment there- except that I'm not a big plastic fan of anything. :)
I have never made glycerin (or clear) soaps. I have always done CP soaps. I may try it this month though! I don't see why you couldn't use the same mold though.
Yes, I line my mold with wax or parchment paper- whatever I have on hand.

Hi Heather, I'm enjoying the soap series so far :) :) I've never made soap...but I really like the concept because you know exactly what goes into it. I'd read on another blog about lye and water when making soap. What has been your experience? Are the fumes strong? I'm trying to convince my dad that it's safe!!! I'm looking forward to more of these posts.

Oh, I try to stay away from plastic anything, too, ..whenever possible :) :)

Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

Heather,
When combining the lye and liquid (water, goats milk, etc) the fumes are strong and NOT good to breathe in. I always do mine outside with a mask over my face. If you do it safely, in a well ventilated area then the fumes aren't a big deal. I'll go over some safety tips later this week.
